Chinese traditional culture-chopsticks culture

Chopsticks are mostly made of bamboo, but also metal, ivory and plastic. China is the birthplace of chopsticks. The customs of using chopsticks in North Korea, South Korea, Vietnam and other countries are all introduced from China.

The chopsticks are round at one end and square at the other, symbolizing the place where the sky is round; chopsticks are seven inches and six minutes long, and people have seven emotions and six desires;

when using chopsticks, there are three fingers on the top, symbolizing the three talents of heaven, earth and man. The standard length of chopsticks is seven inches and six minutes, which means that humans have seven emotions and six desires, to show that they are essentially different from animals.

The use of chopsticks is also very particular.

Generally, when we use chopsticks, the correct way to use it is to hold the chopsticks with the right hand, pinch the upper end of the chopsticks with the thumb and index finger, and naturally bend the other three fingers to hold the chopsticks, and the two ends of the chopsticks must be aligned.

Before eating, chopsticks must be neatly placed on the right side of the rice bowl. After the meal, the neat vertical code must be placed in the middle of the rice bowl. However, the following methods of using chopsticks must be absolutely prohibited:

1. Before or during the meal, place the chopsticks on the table with uneven length.

This approach is very unlucky, usually we call it "three long and two short". It means "death".

Because the Chinese used to think that a person would be put in a coffin after death. After the person was put in, before the coffin was covered, the coffin consisted of two short boards at the front and back, and a total of three long boards on both sides plus the bottom. The coffin made of pieces of wooden boards together is exactly three long and two short, so this is extremely unlucky.

2. Chopsticks are inserted in the rice.

This would be regarded as disrespectful, because it is usually done when incense is offered to the dead. If you insert a pair of chopsticks into the rice, it is regarded as incense to the dead. So, put the chopsticks in the bowl. Here is never accepted.

3. When having a meal, place the chopsticks on the table in a crisscross pattern.

This is wrong. This is considered to be a × at the dinner table, which is a complete denial of other people at the same table. In addition, this practice is also disrespectful to oneself, because in the past, the × was only played when it was a lawsuit lost. This is undoubtedly denying oneself, which is also unacceptable.
